The Wire Rig
The foundation of any Spiderman swing sequence is the wire rig. In major productions, performers are suspended from a system of cables that can be controlled in real time — adjusting height, speed, and arc mid-swing. The performer's job is to make the mechanical movement look organic.
For our breakdown reel, we recreated a simplified version of this setup to demonstrate the principles. Two anchor points, a single performer, and a camera operator tracking the arc from below. The result shows exactly why the swing looks the way it does.
Camera Placement
The camera angle is everything in a swing sequence. Shooting from below with a wide lens exaggerates the height and speed. Shooting from the side at eye level makes the swing look flat. The classic Spiderman shot — looking up as he swings overhead — works because it puts the viewer in the street, looking up at something impossible.
Post-Production
The wire removal is the final step — and the most time-consuming. Modern VFX tools have made this faster, but it still requires frame-by-frame attention in complex shots. The web itself is added in post, timed to the performer's arm movement and the camera's position.
The magic isn't in any single technique. It's in how all of them work together to create something the eye accepts as real.
