The 0.5-Second Rule
Facebook's algorithm measures watch time in fractions of a second. If your opening frame doesn't create an immediate reason to stop scrolling, the viewer is gone before they've consciously decided to leave. This isn't a creative problem — it's a physics problem. You have to interrupt momentum.
The most reliable way to interrupt momentum is movement. A static opening frame — no matter how beautiful — loses to a dynamic one almost every time. Start with motion: a camera push, a subject entering frame, an action already in progress.
The Camera Move That Works
After testing dozens of opening moves, one consistently outperforms the rest: a slow push toward the subject, starting slightly wide and ending tight. It creates a sense of revelation — the viewer feels like they're being drawn into something. It works for action sequences, for character moments, for product reveals. It's the most versatile tool in our kit.
Pacing the Middle
The hook gets them in. Pacing keeps them there. We structure our reels in three acts: the hook (0–5 seconds), the build (5–45 seconds), and the payoff (final 10–15 seconds). The build is where most reels lose viewers — it's too slow, too uniform, or too predictable. Vary your cut rate. Introduce new visual information every 8–10 seconds. Give the viewer a reason to stay curious.
The payoff should deliver on whatever the hook promised. If your opening frame suggested something surprising, the end of the reel needs to be surprising. Audiences forgive a lot — but they don't forgive a bait-and-switch.
